Are you reflecting with frustration?
Ah, December! A month many coaches take to spend time reflecting on their year. Are you reflecting? Are you looking back at what you had wanted to get done in the way of marketing this year? Are you finding that everything you wanted to do, hasn't happened?
I have had many new clients come to me at the end or beginning of a year, frustrated that they didn't accomplish all that they wanted to. They thought they could do it alone. They thought they'd have time. Do you find yourself disappointed or frustrated that you didn't get everything done? Don't STRESS!!! Chill out! Sure there may be some thoughts, choices or other distractions that got in your way. I suspect you know what to do with those.
Here's a different perspective. What positive things got in the way of doing your marketing? Was it more speaking engagements than you had planned? Did you steadily grow your client base over the year? Maybe you spent more time with your family this year. Maybe you traveled more. Start looking for all the good things you were able to do this year. Focus your energy on that and you may just find exactly what went right in your marketing this year.
Ask yourself these 5 simple questions:
1) What allowed me to do all the positive things I did this year?
2) What marketing strategies did I enjoy?
3) What marketing DID I accomplish?
4) What marketing was most effective?
5) What did I learn about my marketing this year?
Now take those answers and start crafting your marketing plan for 2010. If you feel you will have room, then add some of those pieces you wanted to do in 2008. Check in with a marketing coach who can help you put your plan together, if that will help.
Then get really clear on what it's going to take for you to accomplish your new goals and keep up with your current marketing. Do you need more specifics on technology that will support you in accomplishing your goals? Will you need more help this year? What kind of support will you need throughout the year to keep on track? As a coach, you probably already know what will support you best. Look at your budget, look at your time, look at what's worked and what hasn't. Ask for what you need, so you can move forward with growing your business in 2010.

Conscious Marketing
Last year, I read Eckhart Tolle's book "A New Earth" and since then I've been noticing how presence plays a part in my every day business life. I’d like to share how it fits for me in hopes that others who function like me, might learn how to do the same in their business.
You see, I have this old habit of getting seriously focused on my to-do list. So focused that I lose sight of anything going on around me. As a business owner and marketer this gets me in trouble. If I’m always focused on that list, I miss when something isn’t working. I ignore profits declining. I forget there’s more to life than business and ignore my personal life, too.
I know this about myself and have decided that to-do lists are not for me. Some people don’t get things done without it and I get that. If it works for you, use it! If you are like me and get overly attached to the list, you may want to try presence instead.
I can just hear some of you questioning how anything gets done without a list. I’ll share with you my method.
I know lots of information about marketing strategies. When I choose to do one, I already know what it takes to execute it. In my business day I stop and ask myself “What’s most important right now?” I do this whenever I have a moment; between calls, during lunch, at the beginning of my day etc… I listen for the answer. I trust that whatever comes to mind is what needs to be worked on.
You may wonder how I meet deadlines. I trust that my inner knowing can guide me and keep me on track. So far (after 4 years of this practice), I’ve always been satisfied with the outcome of my own projects. That’s not to say that I NEVER extended deadlines or run way longer on a project than I originally planned. It just means I trusted that whatever time it takes is the time the project needed to take. In the end, I always end up with a well executed marketing strategy for myself. I also get through the implementation process with very little (if any) stress. Trusting my own process allows flexibility, awareness, and choice. Without my own deadline, I get to focus on what’s most important right now.
As you may know, I also work with a team and I handle the marketing implementation for my clients. I rarely do any of the “work” for my clients (that’s what I have a team of experts for). When I do take on a client project, I get it done on time.
Trusting my inner knowing will keep me on track, works.
Again, this method of selecting what marketing strategy to work on is not for everyone, but it can be helpful for those of you who get stuck in the list, like I do.
