Thank Goodness for Professional Relationships!

On August 28th (Friday) I received a telephone call asking me if I was in London.  Thoroughly confused, actually being wakened from a very deep sleep, I said no, never have been to London, wasn't planning to be in London - in fact, never have I been issued a passport!  My caller, whose identity will remain private to avoid any retaliation from the guilty parties, continued by telling me that someone must have hijacked my identity on FaceBook and is sending messages to my connections telling them that I was mugged and held at gunpoint, robbed of all credit cards, cell phone and money and now am stuck without funds to pay my hotel bill and get a return flight back to the USA.  This scammer asked them if they could help by sending money that would be paid back upon my return to the US.  I was dumb-founded, just couldn't believe that something like this had happened to me - I'm a small business owner, building a business by teaching others to build relationships.  What could a scammer expect to get from me?

You have no clue how shocked I was!  We always think that those situations happen to others, but it could never happen to me . . . but, I'm living proof that it does happen to innocent people.  Without that phone call, I would not have even known what was happening.  My business could have literally disappeared - without any wrong doing on my part!

As I sat down to start working yesterday, I found quite a few emails and messages from online friends, both on FaceBook and on LinkedIn, all asking pretty much the same question(s) with their number one concern being my safety.  Think about that - how awesome is that for people who I have not met face-to-face, but have built an online relationship with - to take the time to make sure I was safe and to know that someone was misrepresenting me! I thank them all from the bottom of my heart!

Many thanks to all of you for taking the time to telephone me, send me an email and drop me a note.  This has been a real eye-opening experience for me, but I'm looking to make it a positive one!

As a Networking Coach, my business is based on building relationships.  Thankfully I have been successful in this area, because good online friends, like you, are very supportive and caring, during times like this.  If I had not built these relationships, my online contacts could have very easily disappeared, without any notice to me, when spammers took my account and used it to what they thought, would be their advantage.  All the hard work and dedication I have put into building my reputation online could have disappeared within a second or two, without my knowledge!

I  have filed a report that this was a  419 Scam with  FaceBook and am now waiting on a solution from them. Other than following their recommendation to  immediately change my password, there is not much else that I can do at this time.

In the meantime, I'm letting everyone know that this was a hijacked account and to take all precautions possible to insure their protection of their identity.  Thankfully, my connections know, like and trust me and for that I am truly grateful!

I'm documenting this frightening experience on my blog, and on several others, with the intention of spreading the word as far as possible about identity theft and the consequences to the innocent victim(s).

You have no idea  how much your support means to me, thanks so much for taking the time to telephone me or send me a note!  Relationships DO work . . . if you didn't know, like or trust me, you would have "assumed" (and been wrong) that this was really me, asking for money to help me get back home.    Communications from me are usually about business, quotes, tips, tricks, general advice so it was clear to my connections when they received this IM that this could not really have been me, requesting they send money to help me get home!

One other point I wanted to make . . . I don't message my IM with the exception of using Skype and I only message with those I know on Skype - I don't search for new people to chat with, I chat with only people who have connected with me in some way and we have exchanged Skype details.

Please, do take care and protect your identity.  Online business can be fun and financially rewarding, but don't get carried away thinking everything is A-OK without keeping an eye on what people are saying about you.  Set up Google Alerts, do everything you can to find out when and how your name is being used.  With a bit of caution, you can be very successful with your online connections.

Comments, thoughts, suggestions on what else I could do about this situation would be greatly appreciated.  I'm looking forward to reading your thoughts!

Your Referral Network - Is it Working?

If your referral network is not working the way you want or expect it to, it's your responsibility to make it work. Perhaps you have not been keeping them up-to-date on the new products/services you are providing?  Do they know all the original products/services you provide?

Does your Referral Network have current business cards, brochures, website information, email information, and your offline contact information?  Do they know you are on Twitter, FaceBook or LinkedIn?  Are they aware that you are involved in any online social networking?  Your referral partners need to be informed so that they may educate those in their networks and refer the perfect prospects for your business.

BUT . . . Referral marketing is a two-way street.  Do you make sure your referral partners know that you are interested in what THEY do, rather than just worry about how interested they are in what you do?  Remember, it's always about What's In It For Them (WIIFT) not What's In It For You (WIIFY).  Do you know if they are involved in online social marketing?  If so, are  you connected to them and sharing your connections with them? How about their products/services - are you keeping up-to-date on what they are doing so that you can appropriately refer them? Are you genuinely interested in their business? Or are you just interested in what they can do for you?  Do you know how to properly refer them? Are you referring them? Are you following up with each other on a regular basis?

networking-ladyIt IS your responsibility to inform your referral partners on what a good referral is for you AND to make sure you know what a good referral is for them!  . Responsibility is something people are sometimes reluctant to accept. Actions taken on your behalf by other individuals is YOUR responsibility, so be sure to choose the people that are the right ones to work with.  People who can readily understand what you do and how you do it AND are able to properly communicate to you what they do and how they do it for reciprocal referrals! Demonstrate your competence and integrity, maintain the effectiveness and strength of your referral relationships and make this process work . . . for both of you!

How are YOU training your referral partners?  What are you doing to maintain these relationships?  Without maintenance, everything breaks down - just like your car - without regular maintenance, things stop working.  Do you want that to happen to your referral partners?

Share your thoughts and ideas with us in the comments section - how can I be of help to you?

Netweaving Begins With: “Who Do You Know Who . . .”

Things have been a little quiet around here lately.  What have you all been up to?  Tell us about your latest networking event that you attended - online or offline - meet any new exciting or interesting people? How about some new JV partners?

Netweaving is really a lot of fun and it is the latest, best way to utilize your network.  You can position yourself as a Resource, a go-to person, if you will, one that has a massive contact list and knows just the right people for the right situation and is willing to share that information with others.

You could also position yourself as a Connector, one who helps others by introducing them to key people that may be needed to help develop their business to the next level, or may simply have a need for their services or products.

By helping someone else, focusing on others, your networking efforts are laser-sharpened and people will respond.  By doing these activities without the thought of what's in it for me (WIIFM) or without any anticipated immediate personal payback you are truly netweaving!  You may never be able to attribute a growth in your business from one particular person or event, but you WILL benefit by paying it forward.  I'd love to see you all concentrate on doing that, see what the results are - I know you will be absolutely amazed!  Givers do gain - sometimes the gain is a whole lot more than financial wealth.

A great example of netweaving is exactly what we are doing in our Skype Room network. When someone is having a problem with their blog, Squidoo lens, or website, and need advice on how to fix or solve their problem, they turn to one of us.  We are here to help one another!  Do we expect to be financially paid for our help - no, we don't.  We simply help one another and by helping one another, we all grow.  There are exceptions to this when two people contract with each other to work together and that's perfectly okay - there's nothing saying that services and/or products cannot be paid for - we are running businesses!  But the paying it forward opportunity excels right here, in this network.   I hope you are all aware of the rich contacts you have made here and will continue to help one another - together we will all grow and be wildly successful!

If you're interested in joining our Skype Room Connections, click here.  You do need to have Skype installed on  your computer (it's a free service, you are able to talk computer to computer anywhere in the world, free!) and please be sure to develop your profile on Skype!  As a community, there is a lot of great information that is shared with others and we would love to have you participate too!   We also welcome your comments and your help in generating conversations!

So now tell me - who have you connected with lately?  Have you helped someone grow their business by connecting them with someone in your network or have you helped them solve some sort of problem with their business?  If you are looking for some help for yourself or your business, the easiest way to ask is to start with "who do YOU know WHO . . ." and netweaving begins!  Keep it moving forward and help someone else - share your knowledge, time or talents!  When you are able to help someone else, and they insist on paying for your help, simply ask them to go out and find two (2) other people that they can help in some way.  By giving them the opportunity to help someone else, you are providing them a rich opportunity to grow - giving them the opportunity to wear the "Netweaver's Glow!"

I invite you to join in the conversation here, post your comments and let us get to know more about you!  I'm always available to serve you just let me know.  I'm looking forward to learning more about you and your business!  Make it an awesome day - help someone do something, meet someone, or simply share a business-building tip - you'll be glad you did!
