What Would WendyY Do? Group Coaching is the Answer!

wwwd

I'm always entertaining questions about group coaching.  Coaches, speakers and trainers want to know things like how group coaching works, the hottest group coaching strategies, tech tips and innovative resources to create bestselling group coaching programs.

What Would WendyY Do? is a new category for the Group Coaching Mastery blog.  I'll blog regularly to share my answers to your burning questions about group coaching.  How kewl is that?

I thought I'd begin with the most frequently asked question, "What's the difference between a teleseminar, a mastermind group and group coaching?"

What is a Teleseminar?

According to NACHA (a national association of payment processing organizations), a teleseminar is "an educational event conducted over the telephone and is an affordable and convenient education alternative.  After pre-registering, participants are given a dial-in phone number and a passcode to enter the call. A facilitator leads the teleseminar while participants listen in to various speaker presentations. Attendees can download web-based handouts to their desktops. Near the end of the teleseminar, participants are given the opportunity to ask specific questions of the presenters."  This is a very clear definition of how the teleseminar process works.  I love it!

What is a Mastermind Group?

The concept of the mastermind group was developed in the late 1900's by Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich.  Hill defined a mastermind alliance as, "The coordination of knowledge and effort of two or more people, who work toward a definite purpose, in the spirit of harmony."

Based on that definition, members of the mastermind group are sharing in a common goal.  Everyone wants to work toward something similar but maybe for different reasons or they’re going to apply it in a different way.  Masterminding is brainstorming - a collection of connection and energy that really supports the process of growing and learning and sharing ideas together.

What is Group Coaching?

Enter the group coaching program:  a live or virtual two-way conversation between members and the leader/group coach who is also the subject matter expert.  Group coaching is highly interactive and involves action and accountability.  The interaction is guided by content-rich exercises, engaging activities and transformational dialogue based on the expertise of the group coach.  Group members actively participate in the learning process and are held accountable for real-life application of what they're learning in the group.

So, What Would WendyY Do?

As kewl as it sounds, these days a teleseminar has turned into a lecture by phone where only the host can be heard and all others are muted during the call. Although I regularly host teleseminars, my community has specifically requested interaction and accountability. Unfortunately, a teleseminar won't offer much of either.

I enjoy the synergy created in a mastermind group.  I'm surrounded by like-minded peers and we're there to support one another in achieving our goal.  Mastermind group members actively participate and the host or organizer acts as a facilitator, encouraging mutual responsibility, full participation and collaboration to help members accomplish the common goal.

I’m kind of partial to group coaching if you might imagine.  Group coaching stands out far beyond a teleseminar or a mastermind group because of the transformation.  Very simply, people participate in group coaching programs because they believe the program will help solve a specific problem their facing.  The role of the group coach or subject matter expert is to share tools, resources and strategies to solve that problem and create a transformational learning environment, guided by solid content, thought-provoking questions and compelling stories.  Transformation in group coaching guarantees a resolution to the problem and genuine change in the group members.

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is an amazing technology for group coaching! In the next, What Would WendyY Do? I'll answer the question: What is NLP and how do you use it in group coaching?

What burning questions do you have about group coaching? Maybe you want to know how to get more people enrolled in your program or how to create masterful content. Ask your question and I'll answer in an upcoming post.

10 Tips to Make Group Coaching Count in 2010

2010

Incredible!!  I've been leading live and virtual groups for almost 30 years!  (I can't believe I said that though I admit it is an absolute fact.)

Coaching groups is a very fulfilling experience and can be lucrative when you understand how to leverage your time and talent effectively.

Here are few tips to help your group coaching count in 2010:

  1. Use $5 words and understandable language to ensure your learners understand. Avoid the complicated coaching jargon.  Even your clients who are coaches want simplicity and clarity.

  2. Master the irresistible closing offer to create lifelong client relationships. Think about the conversation you want to have with your clients that builds rapport and invites the client to do business with you.  It's a whole other marketing lingo and easy when you know how.

  3. Nothing is personal!  Understanding the truth of this point is the quickest way to ensuring you promote a spirit of caring and fairness every member of your group coaching program.

  4. Be the leader you want to see in your learners. Your job is to model a great learner, leader and guide.  What kind of group coach do you say you are?

  5. Coach learners in your groups based on your passions. Anything else is artificial.  That is all.

  6. A powerful question transcends traditional boundaries and expands the minds of your learners. Ask the open-ended question that challenges your learner to amazing answers.

  7. Begin your group coaching program with the info product in mind. It makes it easier for you to create an information product that rocks!

  8. Showcase the best of your content to transform your learners.  Remember, group coaching is highly interactive.  Think QUALITY vs. QUANTITY!

  9. Leverage the amazing power of social media to attract the right client to your group coaching program. I have lots of favorite social media sites.  Why? Very simply, social media works!!

  10. Execution is simple when you understand it's simply a way to organize and create structure.  KEWLIO, right?!

Get your group coaching in gear in the new year with these simple tips.  I'd love for you to share your thoughts and tips that work for you.
